Vietnam’s auto sales last month plunged nearly 27% year-on-year to 22,540 units as consumers continued to tighten their spending amid economic difficulties.

Sales in August were lower than in June and July. So far this year March recorded the highest sales at over 30,000 units, according to the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association, which does not include data from Thanh Cong Motor and VinFast.

The SUV Mazda CX-5 was the best-selling car in August at 1,725 units, followed by the Mitsubishi Xpander on 1,701 units.

In the first eight months, sales plunged 30% to 184,554 units.

Truong Hai Auto Corporation led in sales with 58,042 units, down nearly 38% year-on-year.

Toyota followed it at 34,372 units, also down 38%.

Mitsubishi and Honda rounded out the top five.
