Globe Takes Leadership Role in Setting New Sustainable Telecom Standards

Introduction
In a significant step towards sustainability in the telecommunications industry, Globe has made a profound impact by participating in the inaugural Green Network Index (GNI) study led by GSMA Intelligence (GSMAi). This initiative marks a critical advancement in developing greener network systems and establishing industry-wide environmental benchmarks.

Globe’s Commitment to Sustainability
As one of the select six telecom companies globally to engage in this pioneering project, Globe demonstrates its unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship. The company’s active role in the research geared towards enhancing network sustainability and minimizing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reflects its efforts in pushing the envelope for eco-friendly business practices.

Yoly Crisanto, Globe’s Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in this domain, stating, “Our involvement in the GNI study is a testament to our dedication to integrating sustainable practices that not only propel our industry forward but also align with our goals for achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.”

Insights and Improvements Gained
Apple Evangelista, Globe’s Head of Sustainability and Social Responsibility, noted that the insights derived from the GNI are instrumental in refining the company’s strategies concerning energy efficiency and renewable energy adoption. This aligns with the escalating global support for sustainable practices in the telecom sector, with the majority of operators, responsible for 70% of the industry’s revenue, vowing to slash GHG emissions as per the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).

Rising energy costs, constituting 15-20% of a telco’s operational expenses, along with the increasing significance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) metrics in financial assessments, underscore the urgency and benefit of this initiative.

Creating the Green Network Index
Responding to these needs, GSMAi has developed the GNI, a unified metric that allows for better compatibility among telecom operators and supports their sustainability journeys. “The GNI not only tracks but actively encourages progress in mobile network operators’ sustainability endeavors, enabling data-driven decisions towards a greener future,” stated Tim Hatt, Head of Research at GSMA Intelligence. This index expands upon GSMAi’s earlier analyses by incorporating aspects like energy and carbon efficiency, renewable energy use, and system performance.

Impact on the Retail Sector and Consumers
This pioneering work by Globe in collaboration with GSMAi could set new benchmarks for the telecom industry, encouraging a shift towards more sustainable practices globally. Such initiatives not only reduce operational costs but also improve corporate responsibility ratings, potentially influencing consumer preferences towards environmentally conscious providers. As this trend gains momentum, it is likely to instigate broader changes across the retail and consumer landscape, heralding a new era of sustainability-focused business strategies.
