Cagayan de Oro Teams Up with National Agencies to Tackle Fiber Optic Challenges
In an effort to combat the increasing occurrences of fiber optic cable cuts during road construction in Region 10, the Cagayan de Oro City government has joined forces with Globe Telecom and national government agencies. This collaborative initiative aims to secure essential telecom infrastructure and ensure seamless connectivity for its residents.
An inter-agency task force has been established, involving the local CDO government, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). This team will oversee and guide the protection of telecommunications infrastructure amidst ongoing and future road constructions.
Globe Telecom reported a significant spike in the number of fiber optic disruptions, with 54 incidents recorded in CDO from January to December 2024, marking the highest in the region. The first quarter of 2025 alone saw an additional 14 new incidents. These disruptions highlight the critical need for improved measures to safeguard telecom services that have become integral to daily life and business operations.
The importance of uninterrupted internet service was underscored by Globe officials, who pointed out that collaborating effectively is key to minimizing service interruptions. NTC Region 10 Director Teodoro Buenavista Jr. emphasized that the task force will enhance coordination among agencies, ensuring construction activities consider telecom infrastructure. He believes that many of these disruptions can be prevented with better communication and planning.
DPWH Region 10 Director Lilibeth Aparecio has instructed district engineers to work closely with the task force, highlighting that past cooperation with telecommunication companies like Globe has already led to fewer incidents. Contractors are now more informed about critical locations, which helps in avoiding infrastructure damage during road works.
This strategic alliance and the subsequent improvements in infrastructure protection are likely to have far-reaching effects on the retail sector and consumer trends in Northern Mindanao. Ensuring robust telecom connectivity not only supports the business environment but also enhances consumer satisfaction by providing consistent access to digital services and e-commerce platforms. As this initiative takes root, it could set a precedent for similar collaborations across the country, potentially reshaping how public and private sectors manage and execute urban development projects.
