China Mobile International Limited (CMI) has made significant strides in the Asian telecommunications landscape with the launch of its first mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) service in Malaysia. This announcement was made during the China Mobile SEA Cooperation Conference held in Kuala Lumpur, marking a pivotal moment for CMI as it taps into the vibrant Malaysian market by partnering with Maxis’s mobile network.
Operating under its CMLink brand, CMI plans to offer customers seamless 4G and 5G mobile services, enhancing connectivity and communication opportunities in the region. A mobile virtual network operator provides mobile services without owning the underlying network infrastructure, instead utilizing the capabilities of host operators like Maxis. CMI has previously established MVNO services in markets across the globe, including the UK, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, and Italy.
Innovative Features Tailored for Global Citizens
CMLink promises to cater specifically to the needs of students and professionals living in or traveling to Malaysia. Its standout features, such as “1CMN” (one card, multiple numbers) and China-Malaysia data sharing services, aim to ensure that users can remain effortlessly connected between China and Malaysia. There’s nothing quite like having your own “phone backpack” — that is, not just one number but multiple ones, all while enjoying seamless service!
A Partnership Reinforced for Future Growth
This new collaboration is a natural extension of the long-standing relationship between Maxis and CMI. Their partnership was further solidified by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in August 2024, which aimed to propel 5G initiatives and drive forward digital innovation in the region.
