Apple has once again taken the initiative to protect its users from potential cybersecurity threats, unveiling alerts for those targeted by sophisticated spyware attacks. Recent reports indicate that Apple’s threat notification system has successfully reached users across 100 countries, with two individuals coming forward to share their experiences. Italian journalist Ciro Pellegrino reported receiving an alert informing him that his iPhone was compromised by spyware akin to the infamous Pegasus malware, which is often employed by state-sponsored actors.
“I received a verified threat notification from Apple stating they detected a mercenary spyware attack against my iPhone,” Pellegrino shared in a recent article on Fanpage.it, highlighting the severity of the situation.
Eva Vlaardingerbroek, a Dutch right-wing activist, also disclosed her experience with Apple’s notification. Vlaardingerbroek tweeted a screenshot of her alert, which warned of a targeted spyware attack linked to her identity or occupation. “I have a message for them: It won’t work,” she stated defiantly, emphasizing the need for personal resilience amid threats.
The notification cautioned users that while Apple is highly confident in its detection abilities, absolute certainty is unattainable. It stressed the importance of taking such warnings seriously.
To enhance protection against potential spyware threats, Apple urges affected users to enable Lockdown Mode through the Settings menu. This feature provides robust security for individuals targeted by advanced digital threats, activating within seconds.
Apple also advises users to modify their passwords for sensitive accounts and update their devices to the latest software, currently iOS 18.4.1. Additional recommendations include updating all Apple devices and messaging apps to safeguard against future attacks.
